Cupping Therapy ( Hijama)
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which special cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This practice has been used for thousands of years in various cultures, particularly in traditional Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Egyptian medicine. The suction created by the cups is believed to enhance blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

Benefits Of Cupping Therapy
-
Pain Relief Cupping can help alleviate muscle tension, reduce pain, and increase blood circulation to the affected area. It is often used for back pain, neck pain, and muscle soreness.
-
Improved Blood Circulation By drawing blood to the skin’s surface, cupping improves circulation in the local area, which may help promote healing and reduce inflammation.
-
Detoxification Cupping is believed to help remove toxins from the body by improving lymphatic drainage and promoting the body's natural detox processes.
-
Boosting Skin Health Cupping can improve blood flow to the skin, which may enhance skin health, reduce acne, and minimize scars and stretch marks.
Process Of Cupping Therapy
The process of cupping therapy involves several key steps to ensure it is effective and safe. Here’s a breakdown of how the therapy typically works:
1. Preparation
- Consultation: Before the session, the therapist will consult with the client to discuss their health concerns, medical history, and specific areas of discomfort.
- Sanitization: The therapist cleans the skin in the treatment area to ensure it is free of dirt or oils, reducing the risk of infection.
2. Selection of Cups
- The therapist chooses the type of cups to be used, which can be made of glass, silicone, bamboo, or plastic. Glass cups are often used for traditional fire cupping, while silicone cups are commonly used for more gentle, gliding techniques.
3. Creating Suction
There are two main methods to create suction on the skin:
- Dry Cupping (Traditional)
- Fire Cupping: The therapist uses a flame to heat the air inside the cup, then quickly places the cup on the skin. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum, pulling the skin up into the cup.
- Pump Suction Cupping: Instead of fire, some therapists use a hand-held pump to create suction. This is a safer alternative for some clients and doesn’t involve heat.
- Wet Cupping (Hijama)
- In wet cupping, after the suction is created, small incisions are made on the skin beneath the cup to draw out a small amount of blood. This is believed to help remove toxins from the body. After the incisions, the cup is re-applied to collect the blood.
4. Cup Placement
- The cups are placed on specific points on the body, often along meridians (energy pathways) or areas of pain, muscle tension, or inflammation. The number of cups and their placement will depend on the condition being treated.
5. Duration of Treatment
- The cups are typically left on the skin for 5 to 15 minutes, during which time the skin will rise and redden due to the suction. This helps to increase blood flow and release muscle tension.
- In dynamic or moving cupping, the therapist may apply oil to the skin and move the cups around to massage the area while maintaining suction.
6. Removal of Cups
- After the desired amount of time, the therapist releases the suction by lifting one side of the cup and allowing air to flow in. The cups are then removed gently.
7. Aftercare
- The treated area is cleaned, and the therapist may apply soothing lotions or oils to the skin. In wet cupping, the area where incisions were made is cleaned and bandaged.
- After the session, it is common to see round marks or bruises where the cups were placed, which usually fade within a few days.
- The therapist may also advise the client to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and avoid cold exposure immediately after the session.
8. Post-Treatment Effects
- Clients often feel relaxed, and may experience reduced pain and improved mobility in the treated areas. However, some people may experience mild soreness, fatigue, or dizziness, which usually resolves quickly.
